Learn About Being a Navy Information Systems Technician
Learn About Being a Navy Information Systems TechnicianLearn About Being a Navy Information Systems TechnicianInformation Systems Technicians (ITs) go to sea and shore assignments where they take on a variety of roles maintaining the Navys computer and networking assets. Often theres the classic helpdesk work (Have you tried turning it off and on again?) in support of local area networks, software, and hardware (mostly Windows-based platforms), but thats not all. ITs also deal with data-transmission systems including fiber optics, digital microwave, and tactical and commercial satellites (Navy Enlisted Occupational Standards). They also manage cryptologic communication equipment (machines that perform the digital-age equivalent of translating secret code) and transmit secure messages between naval commands. Education ITs begin their careers with basic training (like all sailors) at Naval Station Great Lakes in Illinois. Technical education commences in Pensacola, Florida at Corry Station, home of the Navys Center for Information Dominance (which wins the prize for making IT sound like a department aboard the Death Star). According to the Navys recruiting website, the 22-week course covers everything from technical preparation in database design to computer networking to working closely with operating communications systems. Because Navy ITs deal with networks across the globe in offices, aboard ships, and on battlefields training also includes work with radio frequencies and satellite communications. Certifications Certifications are the key to a career in computer fields. The guy that used to program characters to race across the screen on his Commodore 64 may have been a whiz in his time, but if he hasnt stayed up to date, hes worthless in todays IT environment. Likewise, a Navy IT career will falter quickly if you dont keep your skills fresh. Luckily, theres a plethora of Navy-funded credentials and certificates for ITs on Credentialing Opportuniti es On-Line (COOL), including CompTIA A, Linux, and ServerCertified Information Security ManagerSecurity Certified Network Specialist, Professional, and ArchitectETA Fiber Optics Installer and TechnicianNine different Microsoft certifications Even if you just want to do your time and move on to IT on the civilian side, remember that leaving the service without taking advantage of the Navys Credential Program means youll end up (a) digging around in couch cushions to pay for those credentials yourself, or (b) waiting for job offers beside a phone that never rings. Certifications establish professional credibility and are appealing on your resume. Military Requirements To become IT technicians, recruits must have a high school diploma and no hearing or speech impediments. When you take the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery, focus on the General Science, Arithmetic Reasoning, and Mathematics Knowledge (MK) portions, which must total 222 (with the MK score doubled). The Elec tronics Information section can also count toward the required score removing the double emphasis on Mathematics which is funktelefon if youve taken any courses in basic electronics. Since network security involves sensitive information by nature, it should come as no surprise that a job handling networks for the worlds most powerful navy requires a security clearance. You must be eligible for at least a Secret clearance, but since the Navy merged IT with Cryptologic Communication Technicians, more positions that require Top Secret clearance have opened in the fleet. A higher level of clearance just opens many more opportunities, according to the Navy Personnel Commands IT professionals. Career Outlook The Information Systems Technician field, unlike some other ratings that branch and converge, has its own career path straight to E-9 Master Chief Information Systems Technician. As career sailors progress above E-6, they take on increasingly supervisory and administrative role s involving the review and filing of reports and the oversight of communication security. IT detailers (the sailors who decide where all ITs in the Navy are assigned) recommend that beyond normal duties, ITs get warfare qualifications whenever possible to make them more competitive with their peers. Think that working in IT means youll stay in an air-conditioned server room, far away from the ocean? Detailers also emphasize that ITs must do their ritterlich share of sea duty - alternating between three years onshore and three to four years on a ship. The good news is, youll see the world. With a well-rounded career and the right Navy-funded certifications, IT sailors can also get a big head start on lucrative post-military careers. What to do if your partner works too much
What to do if your partner works too muchWhat to do if your partner works too muchWorkhas a way of, well, getting in the way. In any relationship, there are going to be nights, weekends, and even holidays, where one parent is forced to stay late at the office orspend the day behind the warm glow of a computer or phone screen.Recitals will be missed, dinner reservations will have to be canceled, family plans will have to be rearranged. unterstellung incidents, when isolated and spaced far apart, rarely have any long-term impact on a relationship and, after a few words and a mea culpa or two, tend to fade away. However, when the scales begin to slip out of balance on a more regular basis and one partner is habitually working late, bringing work home, or going into the office on weekends, the hard feelings linger. Even if the other partner isnt consciously saying, I am choosing to go to work rather than be with you, the fact remains that, by doing just that, even as a result of external p ressure, they are making the choice to not be present, and that leads to emotional distress on both sides. This is an undeniably tricky problem to solve. But heres how to go about it.Why the youre always working argument arisesAccording to Gabrielle Freire, a Los Angeles-based marriage and family therapist, there are a number of reasons for a partner to overwork. That person may be feeling stress or pressure either from work or from their partner, says Freire. For example, the workaholic may be working hard to impress their boss, or to keep up with the couples or the familys lifestyle.Regardless of the reason, the end result is that someone is working a lot and not being present for their partner who, likely, is stressed, lonely, irritated or frustrated. When persistent working threatens to drive a wedge between two people, it can be as difficult a hurdle to overcome asinfidelity. And while that might sound like hyperbole, the fact is, the emotional wounds created by one partner seem ingly choosing work over the other is similar to themsleeping with a different partner. The reason why someone might feel cheated on when ?their partner is a workaholic is because the dynamics of work often parallel those of love, says Mark Borg Jr, Ph.D., psychologist and co-author ofRelationship Sanity Creating and Maintaining Healthy Relationships. In many ways, this is about the relationship that thecheating partnerhas with work - and how this person is getting the needs that are meant to be met in partnership by work or career instead. When the idea that one partner may be having their needs fulfilled elsewhere crystalizes, experts agree that the argument then becomes less about absence and more about whats happening at home. When arguments arise, says Borg, it is an opportunity for both people in the relationship to hit pause and, with as little offensive- or defensiveness as possible, ask themselves, and each other, What is my part in this?Whats the short-term solution? When th e youre always working argument flares up its a good time to, as Borg suggests,, try and evaluate what is happening in the relationship. The overworking is only part of the problem and chances are there are unmet needs on both sides. Rather than focusing on the fact that one partner is out at work, try and unravel why theyre working so hard.Freire proposes asking each other about their deeper thoughts and feelings on the issue in an effort to identify and hopefully change outdated or unrealistic expectations, beliefs or behaviors that both partners are having about the overworking. Perhaps, for example, the workaholic believes they need to provide a certain lifestyle to their partner or family, or maybe they used to work a lot while the other partner welches going to school, but not that partner graduated and is working again.Borg says that, in order for these conversations to be successful, the burden of responsibility has to be doled out, if not equally, at least as equitably as p ossible. I often suggest to couplesworking through issueslike this that each take no more than60 percent and no less than 40 percent responsibility for whatever issue is at hand, he says. The 20 percent space between is a space of shared accountability, ownership and intimacy. Rather than simply blaming oneself or ones partner, by accounting for ones own ?part in the situation, each partner attains the awareness and power (individually) and empowerment (mutually) to work through tricky, painful and scary emotional issues together.Whats the long-term solution? If couples can successfully crack what it is thats driving one or the other to work as hard as they do, that leise might not entirely fix the problem. This is a problem that will need to be likely tackled throughout the long term.Experts agree that the usual fixes - physical contact, scheduled date nights, etc - should be put into play, but changes in behavior and communication need to take place as well. Work isnt going to go away, but the way both partners approach it can help manage expectations and establish healthier reactions when a late night crops up.There are basic things couples do which only perpetuate the pattern of hurting one another, and making past problems just snowball, says Grant Brenner, Borgs Relationship Sanity co-author. Each person has to seriously consider the idea of what it would mean to make a commitment to work on the relationship. It would mean not only developing more mutual and compassionate ways of interacting and speaking, learning to listen, and spending more time on the relationship, but also working on their own individual issues for the sake of the relationship. This article was originally published on Fatherly.com.

Job Promotion Interview Questions
Job Promotion Interview QuestionsJob Promotion Interview QuestionsWhen youre interviewing for a newly opened, vertical position or for an internal job vorrcken with your current employer, many of the questions you will be asked are standard interview questions that all candidates are expected to answer. Be Prepared to Demonstrate Why Youre a More Desirable Candidate If a vertical position on the career ladder at your company opens, find out from your menschengerecht Resources department whether management plans to fill the position internally, or whether they plan to seek outside job candidates. If the latter, then you need to be prepared to demonstrate how your history with the employer makes you a more desirable candidate than someone they might recruit from outside. If, on the other hand, it is clear that the job will be filled internally, then your challenge will be to persuade the hiring committee that you are the most qualified of your peers for this job promotion. It will take some finesse while you definitely will want to highlight your contributions, be careful not to throw your colleagues under the bus in an interview. Youll still have to work with these individuals and possibly even manage them if you land the job promotion, so be careful how you answer any questions which ask you to compare yourself to others in line for promotion. Keep in mind that you are not trying to prove that you are better than other candidates you are trying to prove how your own unique experience with the employer and your professional competency has made you the best person to assume the responsibilities that come with promotion. Share Examples Take some time to think, before the interview, about specific examples you can use to show (rather than just tell) how you would be the employers ideal choice for a coveted promotion. There are some things, of course, that are obvious strengths a solid length of tenure or a continuing record of outstanding annual work e valuations, for example. Its also good to think of specific instances where youve demonstrated the team leadership, out of the box thinking, project coordination, or people management skills that you will need in your new role after a job promotion. The big day has arrived, and youre ready to shine in front of the interviewing committee. When interviewing for a job promotion, here are the specific questions related to the company, your role within the company, and the job you are applying for that you can expect to be asked. Job Promotion Interview Questions What do you like best about your current position at the company? What was your biggest success story in XYZ department? Why do you want to leave your current job?Can you tell me what you know about the position you are being considered for? How about our team? Why do you want the new position? Why should we consider you for this promotion? If we were to ask the folks in your department to describe you, which adjectives would the y use?Are you the best candidate for promotion? Why?What training will you need to be successful in this position? How will you handle it if you dont get the promotion? How, if we promoted you, would you deal with others of your colleagues who have been passed up for promotion? If you were promoted, when would you expect your next promotion? If you were promoted, what would you seek to accomplish in your first three months in this role? How to Prepare Most likely, you can skip company research prior to an internal job interview since youre already familiar with it. However, that does not mean this interview will be easy. Dont assume youll get the promotion simply because you are a current employee. Here are tips to help you perform well during a job promotion interview Use Your Insider Advantage When You Respond Remember, you already work for the company. Differentiate yourself from the competition when you are competing with external candidates by mentioning your company-speci fic experience, knowledge, and skills when you answer the interview questions. Its also important to give examples of successful accomplishments and projects, the goals youve met, and your achievements in your current position. Dont Fail to Prepare Its easy to feel over-confident with an internal interview. But you should still take the time to review the standard interview questions that you will most likely be asked. You should also bring a copy of your resume to the interview and be prepared to speak about your complete job history. Dress for Success You do not necessarily have to wear your typical interview outfit, but do make sure to dress professionally. Heres a good rule of thumb Dress to match what the people interviewing you typically wear to the office. Make a Good Impression The interview isnt your only opportunity to make a case for your candidacy. Unlike other people interviewing for the position, you can prove yourself on the job. Be a model employee during the weeks when your company is interviewing candidates. Show off your abilities and skills (and also make sure not to come in late). Write a Thank You Letter Yes, you should still write a thank you letter, even though the interview was internal. First, whether you get the promotion or not, its nice to be considered, and thats worthy of a thank you. And, as with any interview-related thank you note, your letter is an opportunity to sell your candidacy and highlight any important points you neglected to mention during the interview.
